lost
Aight man, GL with that :-\ I've already lost 3 people to smoking, 1 from lung disease, 1 from cardiac arrest, and another to cancer, not including the grand pa on my mother's side that I never met because he died from a heart attack from smoking. And now my dad has developed near debilitating asthma from when he used to smoke, my uncle can barely walk let alone run due to the loss of breathing capacity and my friend who's been smoking for 4 years now can't even ride his bike for a block without nearly dieing. There's always that one person who's a chain smoking drunk and lives to be 80+ years old, but there are a ton of others who slowly shaved off the years of their lives.
And I think it's not a good comparison to look at smokers vs non smokers like that. Group all the smokers together and the ones who HAVE smoked a lot in their past but don't anymore and see the percentage of messed up problems.

a lot of those problems can be hereditarily susceptible. my grand father smoked into his 80s when he died of normal causes, my uncle smokes and other then being a lard arse has no health problems. one of my best mates is in his 30s and smokes, never gets sick can exercise well (ran a marathon for breast cancer recently, was pretty dead after it but then who wouldnt be?). everyone (well, one or two dont) at work smokes and no one has health problems. theres no doubt smokers as a group would have a higher percentage of health problems than non-smokers, if comparing merely on a smoking and non smoking basis, but you could say the same about any negative indulgence

people who exercise regularly will be better off, that's for sure. Maybe it's just the cigs in our country, but people her get messed up pretty badly in their later years. I highly doubt it's mostly a genetic thing since it's effected both side of my family which are euro/native descendants and the other side is southwest asian.

im sure many factors (including amount of cigarettes one smokes, type of cigarettes) are involved, but you still seem to have had an unluckier bout than average, or at least, me.

Smoking does nothing more then drastically increase the probability of cancer due to property in tobacco making it so carcinogenic. Really the damage dealt to the lung cilia can be undone with a good 2-4 week "vacation" from smoking.
Lack of oxygen is also an accompanied problem, but thats fairly obvious anyway. O2 is consumed in the burning reaction taking place on the cigarette and also the damage dealt to the lung from burning air also lowers absorption of O2 of the blood. This is why some body parts may need to be amputated in people who chain smoke, parts just die off due to lack of O2.
But if one can deal with higher chance of cancer, upper respiratory infections and a possible leg amputation down the line go ahead and smoke for the hell of it,
I am sure as hell not the person to go out and make a fucking ad campaign trying to force people to stop.

That's possible that i've had an unluckier bout than average, but I think it's because a lot of people around me smoke(ed). My dad stopped smoking when my mother was pregnant (me inside, lol) and my mother's parents would smoke (father passed away in his 60's from a heart attack, mother stopped smoking). My dad's closest friends smoke (one had a heart attack at 45), my closest aunt on my mother's side I only knew her with a tube in her nose and an oxygen tank, which seemed common for her sister (not so close aunt of mine) both deceased. My mother's cousin has very bad lung condition from smoking. My sister and her daughter (my niece) smoke too. My sister is showing signs of pulmonary problems already. My friend who's only been smoking for 4 years can't ride his bike very far like I mentioned.
I guess it's not that bad since the statistics is like out of ~130 american smokers 1 will die within the year from smoking related causes.
Our leading cause of death isn't smoking, it's obesity, lol *shameful face looking at america*. 1 out of 8 deaths in America is due to obesity. I advocate to my family and friends about health issues, which thankfully isn't too much of a problem. But when it comes to smoking, even if the numbers aren't as high, just because someone doesn't die from it doesn't mean they aren't suffering from the after effects, like my father who has really bad asthma now.
Hey maybe our death toll from smokers is possibly increased with the Obesity problem, especially when dealing with heart attacks, although the people in my family who've died from heart attacks weren't obese, still obesity in america is a factor.
Edit: Micro, the damage that is done by smoking to the lungs is not undoable like you think, otherwise the family members who have stopped smoking would be able to recover their breathing capacity, but they can't. Maybe in a smoker who hasn't been smoking for 20~30 years.

you
you recover roughly 10% of your breathing capacity after 3-9 months of not smoking. still after your big paragraph it sounds like your family is very susceptible to such problems, mines never had problems with smoking and of all the smokers I know, no ones had major problems (including those whove smoked into their 40s and 50s). seems a touchy topic for you so ill leave it at that I love smoking and am sad to see it becoming taboo (glad I live in japan! :D )

yeah smoking in japan was nuts, i remember one guy lit up in a bank once, doing that back here would kick up the biggest shit fight o_O mind you back then people smoking inside public places was pretty much gone, only really saw it in restaurants and other places to have designated areas... i remember getting stuck in the smoking carriage of an overnight train and it stank like crap :s
only one in my family to not smoke, never really understood the appeal of it...

I'm off to teh Isle of Wight festival tmr to see the likes of the Police , Iggy Pop and the Stooges and the Sex Pistols. Should be good fun although it is doubtful that i'll be in a fit state to fully appreciate them

Yeah it was great fun. Got to be at the front for the Stooges, Sex Pistols and the Police, which was obviously amazing. Even the Stranglers put on a good show and I think I'm now a fan of Black Stone Cherry after their rendition of Voodoo Child.
